NEW DELHI: Northern Railway on Tuesday suspended Sushil Kumar from service, following his arrest in wrestler Sagar Dhankar's murder case.
Officials said the suspension would remain in place until further orders are issued.
“A case against Sushil Kumar, (Adhoc) JAG/IRTS, on premature repatriation to Northern Railway from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), in respect of a criminal offence, is under investigation. He was detained in police custody on May 23, 2021, for a period exceeding forty-eight hours,” said Deepak Kumar, CPRO, Northern Railway.
“Now, therefore, he is deemed to have been suspended with effect from the date of detention i.e. May 23, 2021, in terms of Rule 5 (2) of (D&A) Rules, 1968 and shall remain under suspension until further orders,” he added.
The wrestler was a senior commercial manager with Northern Railway, however, in 2015, he was sent to the NDMC on deputation.
From there, he was attached to the Chhatrasal Stadium as an officer on special duty (OSD) by the Delhi government, as part of sports development at the school level.
Kumar had been on the run for over two weeks before he was arrested from Mundka for his alleged involvement in the murder of wrestler Sagar Dhankar.
On Monday, both the NDMC and the Railway Board had written to Northern Railway, following the arrest.
NDMC in its letter had stated that they had received the wrestler’s file from the principal secretary of the education department, along with the copy of a first information report (FIR) linking him to the murder of the 23-year-old wrestler, following which they had requested for repatriation to his parent department and for necessary further action.
